On a more negative note, the trackpad has a very shallow indentation, with a thin ridge around the edge. This may seem like an irrelevant point, but it is much appreciated if you are a fan of the quick-tap keyboard, because it minimizes the risk of accidentally moving the cursor while typing. Until you get used to it, you can sometimes press # instead of Enter.ĪSUS has moved the trackpad noticeably to the left so that it is almost directly below the space bar. This is a bit odd when the key layout and handwriting are otherwise British. The chiclet-style keys are quite comfortable for prolonged typing, although one small problem is that the hashtag key is placed one row above the usual British placement, as in some American keyboard layouts. Since this is a 17-inch chassis, there is plenty of room for a keyboard with full-size keys and a numeric keypad on the right. We’re talking about a gaming laptop powered by a 12th-generation Intel Core i9, 32 GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GPU with a huge, immersive 17.3-inch QHD display at 240 Hz that I’m going to have a little too much fun with. When you turn on the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17, the bright RGB backlit keyboard produces this beautiful red wave that grabs your attention, then comes a thunderous bass tone as if to say, “Hey, we’re serious, pay attention!” When the display appeared in its entirety, the Scar immediately won me over, reminding me of one of those sexy cars from Fast and Furious with second-mortgage lighting effects. But some rivals are challenging the Strix Scar in terms of performance. Although it does not have a camera, which makes it less functional as a home-work computer, and it was hard to find in stock at the time of this writing, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 SE is a strong contender for one of the best gaming laptops. It also features a stunning 17.3-inch 1440p display with Dolby Vision capabilities, all for $3,499. Equipped with an Intel Core i9-12950HX and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, the Strix Scar 17 SE configuration can handle any game or task.
